Cold starting question
I recently had some issues while starting the truck in the morning (20's). I had the IPR replaced about two weeks ago because the truck was shutting down while driving. Within the last two days when starting the truck, the idle is erratic, until it warms up. I did a search on those symptoms and it sounds like the truck has the notorious "romps". I recently did an oil change using Rotella 5W-40 synthetic oil, which I have been using with this truck for several years. The truck currently has 212k and the original glow plugs and relay. I unplugged the IPS (no oil was inside) and when attempting to start truck, the check engine light came on and when I started it, it ran very rough and white smoke coming from the exhaust pipe. I reconnected the IPS, while the truck was running, the check engine light went out and the idle evened out. Could it be my glow plugs need to be replaced? The truck runs fine when warm, just the issue when first started when cold. I have the truck plugged in this evening as the temps are going into the teens. I will see if that helps with the starting in the morning.

I'd start by testing your glow plug relay and the glow plugs themselves. Read the cold weather sticky at the top of the page for the test procedures. Hopefully it's just a bad GPR. Depending on what year model you have, maybe you can just swap the AIH relay and GPR relay and be done.
