Glow Plugs

I have been doing some reading and this morning it was about 30 degrees out side went to start my truck did not plug it in as i usually dont when its that temp out I have started it in a lot colder temps with no problems cycling the light once. I let the glow plug light stay on untill it shut off then went to start the truck it turned over wanted to fire then nothing about 15 seconds cranking time. I then shut the key off and tryed again let the light come on then shut off and it fired right up like normal. My question is do i need new glow plugs or maybe a bad relay? the truck has 75,000 on it I bought it with 60,000 and as far as I know it has the orignal GP's and GPR I have a new fuel filter coming and 8 new motorcraft glow plugs do you think I should change the GPR as well??

Is that a normal sign of a bad relay and not glow plugs? on the second start it start like normal didnt idle bad or anything a little white smoke came out on start up then was gone within a few seconds? If so then i need to put a hold on the glow plugs and get the relay

One relay powers all eight glow plugs.
If one glow plug burns out you will still be able to easily start the truck, but it will idle rough and miss until the cold cylinder warms up enough to fire.
If the relay quits, all eight glow plugs are cold and then the truck will refuse to start in cold weather.

So do you think by having to cycle it the key twice that the relay is not giving enough power to all 8 glow plugs? cause on the second try it fired up normal and idled normal although it was a little louder being that the engine was cold but it didnt miss or anything like that I was thinkin that by cycling the key twice it gave a chance for all 8 glow plugs to heat up enough? sorry im posting like this but i work at a car dealer and have the parts on order but would like to not have to replace all 8 glow plugs if its just a relay

Sounds like batteries to me. You can check your relay with a volt meter or by looking at the display on the radio. Turn the key to the Wait To Start position, turn on your headlights, and then watch the digital clock for a minute. You should see the digits get brighter when the relay kicks off and the glow plugs quit taking juice.

The injectors take a lot of juice to fire. Do you know how much voltage your batteries are giving you just sitting there before you start it?

Well I just put new batteries in it not long ago i think it was july that i put them in. So I dont see how they would be going bad already the engine cranks over fine. I did however replace the glow plug relay and replaced the fuel filter had 15,000 miles on it didnt even look bad. Hopefully its the relay and it starts ok tomarrow morning if not i guess i will try some glow plugs. Last year at this time is when i bought the truck and it started fine all winter in temps as low as 15 degree's without being plugged when I would forget to. any other ideas would be great though

Yes It started like normal again let the light cycle off and it fired right up and ran smooth. Now I have another question I am moving to some apartments that dont have any place to plug my truck in at for the winter months It may at most get to 10 degrees at night will my truck be ok as long as all the glow plugs are working properly to start in that cold of temps?? it kind of worries me as last year when i plugged it in it started fast and sounded much healthier when it was cold
