Installing rebuilt engine into truck and can"t get the alinment pin out. the new engine has the 2 pins in it and the bell housing has 1 pin in it from the other engine. we have tried to take out the one on either and neither one will move. Heated and used vice grips and nothing. Does anyone have any ideas????? 1997 4.2
Not to sound like a smart a$$ but you probably need a better pair of vise grips. Most today are junk. Heat the one on the engine that is cast iron, not on the bell housing. Do not heat the pin, but rather the surrounding area.
You also cannot use a propane torch. You must must a oxy acetalene "big" torch to get the proper amount of heat. As a last resort only, grind it flat and forget it.
At this point nothing is being a smart a$$. Bought new grips tonight going to borrow hotter torch tomorrow. This is the second time this has happened and you would of thought that I would have remembered the last time. It was only 4 months ago. I was going to buy new torch tonight but saw the price whoa. I might put that on Santa's list. The way it looks I won't have the truck together until after Christmas, but what's another week. Thanks for your help.
New update. Pin is out, engine is bolted to bell housing. New problem. Motor mounts are not lining up, didn't have this problem last time. We have jacked up, put down, jumped up and down, said some not so nice words. Still not lining up. Any suggestions? Truck is still on jack stands in the front. We have run out of ideas. Thanks
Been there and had both problems, the Pin thing pissed me off because I should have caught it before the engine went in. For anyone else who may have this problem in the future I beat on it with a hammer and punch to get it to move a little then crushed it a little with the vice grips to get a good grip and rotated it out.
Now for the motor mounts, are you having trouble with the single bolt that joins the two halves or the 3 bolts that bolt into the engine or the frame? From what I remember the Drivers side needs to be pulled apart in half and the bolt put in, the drivers side can be done at the engine block and if you use an engine leveler on the end of the cherry picker you can tilt it to just whee it needs to be.
Also don't forget the splash guard that goes between the engine and tranny, also done that.
