I swapped a 302 into my 65 merc and I cannot get the temp sender to read acurately. It orignally had a 240 I-6 and I am beginning to wonder if the sender from the 302 is a diffrent resistance than the I-6. The guage works fine because when I ground it it reads all the way up. It also moves the gauge a little when its warm but only brings it slightly above the cold line. Shed some light please. Thought this would be simple.
Did you use some kind of sealant on the threads of the sender? If you did that it will not allow for a proper ground. Secondly, I do believe there is a difference between the type of sensors. I had the same issue with my swap and I am going with a wet bulb setup. Once all my gauges are bought and fitted in the new dash panel I am making. Changing the sending unit will be pretty cheap.
Well the senders in are old trucks are smaller and do have a diffrent restistanec than the newer ones. I just used a bushing between the smaller old sender and the bigger temp. sender "hole". Just some info for people needing to do this.
