I have a 1998 F-150 and the temp guage sometimes flips back and forth from normal temp to Hot. The movement is not slow but very quick and it goes back to normal just as fast. It is usually when at idle and then when I accelerate it goes back to normal. Sometimes it acts up while driving. I have replaced the sensor and I know it is not heating up. It is someting else. Please help. Thanks
There is the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor that tells the PCM how hot the engine is and then there is the sender for the temperature gauge.
Both are in the front of the intake manifold. The sender for the gauge should be the closest to the thermostat.
I have replaced both sensors. It is better but not fixed. The guage still dances around. I do not know what else it could be except the guage. PLEASE NO! I don't want to have to replace the whole instrument cluster. Any more ideas?
I would find someone with a good scan tool that can monitor the ECT to see what the temperature is really doing. If it is staying steady but the gauge is jumping around then you probably do have a gauge problem.
