Just bought a new steering gear box, PS pressure line & return line. Is there a way to get the Pittman arm off without a special puller? Would it be cheaper to buy a new Pitttman arm than to buy the puller? and, lastly, who in the world is Pittman and is it spelled with 2 t's or one
It'd be cheaper to just rent a puller rather then by an arm. And no not really any way get on off with it unless you get real luck and a couple smacks to the side of it pops it free.
When I say the side of it I mean just above the nut, smack the side of it at mid beveled/spline area toward the center line of the sector shaft. The sudden shock might sometimes do the trick, same way for example when attempting pop a tie rod or ball joint without using a fork.
I'll just rent one, thanks for the info darn1 cred coming your way. Any Ideas about the mysterious Mr. Pittman and his t's?
That's a one T in pitman...the origin of that name dates back along way's. To the days when in a pit, a man would work that end of a saw. Many mechanical parts designed to transfer power carry that name, didn't you go to school, or were you absent that day...
Check Auto Zone, Oreillys, or Advance Auto Parts. They rent tools like this for free. Basically, you pay for the tool and then they refund your money when you bring it back.

I recently had to pull that thing off, and I bought the "cheap" pitman arm puller from the auto parts store. The expensive one was WAY more money. Anyhow, I took a chance on the cheap one and it worked, BUT the opening wasn't wide enough to clear the stud. So, I had to get the cut-off wheel out and take a bit off of the inside lip of the puller. Was quite annoying to have to do that.
Don't know if it was just the brand I bought or what. Maybe others have had to do the same modification?
rented one from an auto parts store
had to modify it a little bit and they made me pay for it
no returns after alteration
those things are on real good
trying to find the exact arm you need might be a pain
seem to be many different designs and lengths out there
many hours in the scrap yards looking myself
good luck~~~
