i have a 292 motor an i wana get a 4 Barrel Intake with three carbs its my 1st truck with a carb (1960 f250) i wana make it sound mean with long tube headers ) just looking for what some ppl used on thier 292s
Well first you've got to decide what you want.
Do you want a 4 barrel intake?...or do you want one that will take 3 carbs?
You can't have it both ways.
Generally you see people running one 4-barrel, two 4-barrels, one 2-barrel, or three 2-barrels.
I've only had experience running either one 4-barrel or one 2-barrel. Both worked well. The 4-barrel is more performance oriented out of those two.
Two 4-barrels or three 2-barrels are even more performance oriented, but they're harder to tune and more prone to bogging if your engine is stock or even mildly modified.
thanks guys i have a 2bb right now im gonna change 2 a 4bb so ill have to get a intake what names of brand do you guys like i wana get an performance 1
an one more thing im looking at headers for the 292 also an i see some that are fender well exit? do they come out to the fender? or im lookin at full length headers i just want it so sound nasty when im done
The ECZ 9425 B manifold is the best stock 4 barrel intake there is. But frankly at the price they're asking, spend a little more and get a Mummert intake. FORD Y. It is the best 4 barrel intake there is. The only other option is a Blue Thunder intake but I don't believe they are produced any longer so it will be more difficult to find. It should be at about the same price level as the Mummert. Performance is not quite as good but it takes an easy second place. The Blue Thunder also has the exhaust crossover in the manifold whereas the Mummert does not and so the Blue Thunder may be more favorable in cooler climates.
In regard to headers, there was very extensive dyno testing of various exhaust manifolds and headers. Manifolds without question take second place to headers. The only off-the-shelf truck header tested was the offering from Sanderson and it did very well; it wasn't far from the top. The Red's short tube offering is similar but there are differences in the collector design, and it looks like the Sanderson headers may be mandrel bent whereas Red's is not.
Speedway have yet another option with 1 5/8" primary tubes which look good but none were available for testing at that time. However I have a friend who has tested the Speedway headers back to back with Sanderson headers. Testing began at 3000rpm and from there the Speedway headers are stronger until about 5000rpm at which point the short tube Sandersons take over. He hasn't installed the engine yet so I haven't heard if his butt dyno registers more power with them at common street rpm. Red's and Sanderson have 1 1/2" primaries.
When you get these things done it will sound good, but if your opinion of nasty matches mine, it will also need more compression and a bigger cam.
