Help - electrical issue '97 F150 4x4 4.2L
Hello. I am new. I have a '97 F150 ~80K miles. It has either a 97 engine or a 2002 engine with a 97 manifold. I have been chasing P1537/P1538 IMRC codes for months. After blowing out the vacuum lines to the new IMRC motors last weekend, I cannot now start the vehicle. It cranks but does not start. I appear to have no spark and no fuel. I find no blown fuses. I have 12V at the starter and solenoid. The check engine light does not light at key on, but all other lights do come on and go out (except the ABS and Brake light - known issue).
Can anyone post a wiring diagram for ignition and fuel to get me started, or has anyone any thoughts? Thanks.
Update 12/17/11: I note I have power to Fuse 20 in the engine box. I have 12V to fuse 22 in the dash box.

Update: Help - electrical issue '97 F150
It turns out F24 under the hood was shorting. I finally found the short in the injector harness and repaired that. Now I have checked all fuses and none blow. The dash lights are normal and the check light comes on normally again. I find no codes, but I presume that is because the battery was disconnected and the truck has not restarted yet.
My current issue is that the starter no longer cranks. I have 12+ volts from the battery to the starter relay and across the starter terminals. There is continuity in the fusible link to the starter. However, in RUN/START I don't find any voltage to ground from the passenger side of the starter relay.
Does this indicate a bad relay that should be replaced? Thanks.

For your 1997, the small wire going to the starter relay is TAN, instead of RED. But the basic concept is the same. If jumpering 12 volts over to the starter relay's little coil stud results in the starter motor cranking, then the starter relay is OK, and the problem is upstream on the tan wire.
If no cranking when jumpered (and the ground for the relay is good), then the problem is a bad starter relay or starter/heavy-gauge wiring problems.
Then a careful application of the short-the-two-big-studs-together-with-a-screwdriver on the starter relay will prove/disprove whether it's a starter relay problem or not.
But be careful with doing that, as there is a lot more grounded steel around the starter relay in a 1997 F-150 than there is where a Bronco's fender-mounted relay is! Keep that screwdriver shaft off of all the grounded metal!!!
If even the screwdriver test doesn't result in cranking, then time to check the heavy gauge wiring to starter and their connections, and battery/block grounds.
If still a no-go, try a hammer whack or two on the starter case to see if it cranks then. If it does, then the starter motor's commutator or brushes are going, and need a new starter.
Or you could have a deceased starter, and nothing will get it cranking again.
Good to see that you are troubleshooting, and know how to use a DVM properly! I think that puts you in something like 1 tenth of 1 percent of vehicle owners

Thank you very, very much. Your information was correct and helpful. I decided it had to be the starter. I pulled it today, had it checked - failed -replaced it and the truck started right up.
Since it is below freezing here and I was working on it in my yard I will take some time to thaw out.
But again, many, many thanks to you!
