That was an unusual problem! Hope there aren't too many gremlins like that around.
The wiring diagram for 1997, I would think that 1998 would be the same, shows the connector right at the high-mounted brake light/cargo lamp, and then no connector inline until behind the right side of the dash, connector C203, a black connector with 16 pins. Stop Lamp wire is Light Green, Cargo Light wire is Black with Light Blue. The Cargo Light wire also picks up the Dome Lamp on its way up to the front.
I pulled the headliner down years ago for access for hail dent removal, where they massage out the dents from the inside. I removed all of the plastic side panels, anything that holds up the edges of the headliner all around, and Dome Lamp and screw(s) above it. I don't remember enough of the details anymore, but to remove the plastic side panels meant also meant unbolting the rear seat bottom and back, and shoulder belt attachment(s). Then I put the driver shoulder belt back up, without the panel, so I could drive it safely to the dent removal place.
This was on my SuperCab 3-door. It took some time to do, but I don't remember anything really that stumped me. Just took my time and didn't bend or break anything. Putting the headliner back up really needs two people for a little while, so it doesn't get bent or stressed until there are a few panels back on to hold it up. If you have 3 long arms, then you don't need a helper there
