Digital Odometer trouble

Hello all,

I just bought my first Excursion (2002 7.3). Which I am very stoked about.

I have been searching with no luck on a solution to my problem. Hopefully someone might have had this problem or know where to direct me. Thanks in advance.

My question is dealing with the digital odometer. It has trouble displaying the miles on the truck. It likes to stay on one of the "trip" modes. Sporadically I will push the trip/reset button and usually nothing happens, though sometimes it moves to the next "trip". And then to add to the confusion sometimes it will switch by it self over to the miles on the truck, but once I turn it off and back on, the trip comes back up. Also when I hold down the trip/reset button it doesn't reset the trip to 0 either.

Any ideas or thoughts would be wonderful, before I take it to the stealership.

Thanks for the help.

First thing you should try is disconnecting the batteries for 30 minutes or more.
This is like hitting a re-set button on these trucks.

Cool thanks for the info, I saw a lot of these threads while searching. My odometer never goes black, it always displays miles, just the trip miles.
But defiantly something I will look more into.

Thank you for the quick responses.

:Update:

So I disconnected the battery for 45min-ish last night. When I hooked them back up and turned the truck on, the miles showed up. I was too chicken to push the trip/reset button, but will update if the miles stay on or not. Thanks again for the help.

Side note: Thought I would share a picture I took of our Ex. Lovin' it so far.

Well my joy was short lived . My wife drove the truck 2 times today. She drove to store, miles good. Left the store to come home and miles were still good. Then the second trip out today when she started it the odometer read all 8's. 888,888. Those stayed until I pushed the trip button and it brought it back to "trip" miles. So now I'm back to the original problem.

I know the reset/trip button works because I did the test with the digital odometer where you can see engine rpm's, temp etc on the digital read out. The button responded well as I used it to go through the menus.

So I am at a lost. I still have yet to pull the cluster as I am saving that for last. Any other suggestions or ideas? Thank you.

Well I finally got time to pull the cluster and try soldering the pins. They looked good but did it anyways but it still didn't help.

I had the battery's disconnected for an hour while working and that didn't help clear it temporally like it did last time.

Thanks for the help if no one else has any ideas I guess I'll drive without an odometer for awhile before I decide to take it in .

Side note can the dealer plug into the truck and know what the actual miles are on the truck? Thanks.

A FYI. The owner before me installed a Edge Juice w/attitude. I am just using it for the gauges and have it set on stock after reading all the trouble they have been. But cold this possibly be messing up the odometer reading?
