K guys so I bought an 86 for $600 bucks because it has a pretty new motor compared to my low compression junk pile 87 and the 86 is also has the better lookin front grill and its extended cab. So the 86 has a bad c6 that's why it was only $600 bucks but my 87 has a good c6 so I have pulled both trannys out already. Is there anything I should know before I put the 87 tranny in the 86?
If not already done might drain the `87 converter, pull and clean the pan, check intermediate band adjustment. Fill the `87 torque and trans with fresh fluid (around 13qts) when installed.
Make sure that you flush the `86 cooler and lines well before connecting up.
I havnt really looked at the converter is there a place I can drain it from with out removing it from the tranny I heard you need to keep it attached or its hard to get it put it back on correctly
There is a drain bung on the converter, look around the outside edge that is facing you for it.
The seal is about $2.00 but you would have to pull the converter to see it at the front of the trans. If you pull the converter before you drain it, fluid will pour out.
If you do pull the converter (just sldes off) you have to be sure that it is fully seated back in the trans before you install the trans.
First push it fully back towards the trans and measure how far it is in from the bellhousing bolt flange at the minuite. When you reseat it rotate it as you feed it in until you feel it click into place, then measure again and make sure it is as far in as now.
If you do slide it off check the "nose" of the converter well for any signs of wear/grooves.
That would be correct. I also highly recommend doing the pump seal, as it has a high probability of leaking after being disturbed. Better to do it now rather than have to do it over again after having just done it. BTDT.
