I have an 89 F350 Diesel ZF-5spd. The Speedo quit working. I unbolted the cable drive from the transmission and looked at the gear. It appeared to be OK. I assumed the cable was broke so I attached a drill to it (running the drill in reverse mimicks forward travel). This confirmed the cable was not broke but it created another problem. Now the speedo needle hangs straight down (instead of @"0"). If you run the drill in the forward direction, which mimicks reverse travel, the needle will return to "0" however as soon as the drill stops turning, it rotates all the way around to hang straight down again.
PS: I later discovered the origin of the speedo not working, the gear inside of the tailshaft broke. I ordered a new set of gears from Ford however the dash problem concerns me.
-Did I break the speedometer in the dash?
-Is there some way to re-set it?
-Does anyone have instructions for removal / replacement of the speedo?
-Are any of the gasser speedo's interchangable with the diesel?
speedometer is a mechanical gauge. it does not care what engine is in the truck.
any speedometer from 87 to 91 will work.
remove the outer cover, remove the cable, remove the screws holding the white gauge cluster in, remove the screws holding the clear cover on, and use a small screwdriver to pry the speedometer out. you may have to remove the tach first.
i don't have a speedometer here to show you, but this is the tach and a volt/ temp gauge panel.
