The speedometer in my 89 150 is acting up. A few weeks ago i noticed it was not sweeping smoothly across the numbers, more like a shimmy. more recently, it has not been engaging until about 25 to 30 mph. and when it does, it still shimmies. There is a slight noise coming from the dash, so i dont think its the speedo gear in the trans. i would normally say the hell with it, but it is throwing off my odometer, therefore throwing off my maintenance schedule. what is going on with it? is there a good way to get into the dash and look at the speedo? any input is greatly appreciated
even though you assume it isn't the gear, I'd just hop under there pull the 1 retainer bolt and check it anyways, it's easy to do and it will verify your suspision one way or the other it will be bad or good and then you can move on to other places in the system.
You '89 will have a cable drive speedo, and the speed indicator module will unplug from the gauge cluster, so you can test the cable for smooth operation(and inspect the speedo itself) by removing the lense cover over the gauge cluster and pulling out the speedo.
