Non-Working Gauges

When I raised the 1981 300 I6 4Spd Bronco from the grave I knew the gauges were not working so I thought I would replace the sending units of the temp and oil pressure. Well now they still do not work. So a messed around a little and finally got around to pulling the instrument cluster. Come to find out the printed circuit on the back of the cluster was burned up. After visting the local pull a part not even looking for one I found one. Same printed circuit with gauges but w/o tach. However, the newer one is a shift indication automatic trans printed circuit. That should still work, right? NEXT,was the FAILURE of the voltage stabilizer on the back of the instrument cluster and the continued use of the vehicle were the combined demise of the printed circuit frying itself or could there be another problem? Also the reason I pulled the dash and cluster was bc my wiring had fused itself to the metal somewhat frame of the dash. Guess that could have something to do with it?

my 83 has gauge issues too. at first I thought it was just the printed circuit. there are absolutely no lights on the cluster at all to see at night. the battery gauge, temp gauge work...but my speedo, and oil temp don't work at all. the other issue is that the guy previous did some shade-tree wiring to the point that i had to buy a haynes manual to even understand what was going on. i figured that could be the problem for most of my cluster issues. however it could be the printed circuit is screwed up, the speedo drive gear is stripped, the drivegear line may not even be hooked up.... its relatively new to me so i haven't spent the time outside in the cold trying to figure it out. those printed circuits are &*(Sing expensive tho. most of the pick n' pulls around here have been picked clean too.

There's also a fuse for the dash lights. You might that too just in case. Also sometimes the headlight switch itself can wear out and cause the dash lights to stay off.

Heh i think the PO for mine used tin foil as a fuse for my crap. I have working gauges the only one that doesn't work is the coolant temp but there is an aftermarket gauge for that. I haven't bothered looking into it cause i usually have a flashlight in case i am unsure of how fast i am going, the gear selector, the climate control and the hi-beam indicator lights work...
