after i had my tires rotated at NTB there was a loud whining noise coming from the differential...turns out my pinion bearing is shot and now i need a new rear axle...is it possible NTB messed up my axle if they jacked it up under the center of the diff?
I highly doubt it.. like the bottom of diff's are i would think the toughest area. unless they jacked it up on the output of the diff.. witch i don't think they would. It could be it just went. either way it should be able to be repaired/replaced and keep the actual " diff". hope this helps.. fwiw. Best of luck.
If they lifted your truck by lifting on the center section of a Dana 60 type diff, they may have bent the housing. The tubes are slipped into the center section, and can bend.
Did it whine before, or just since the service?
If the whine is new, it has to be something they did. Look at the axle where the tubes go in. Look for leaks, bends, dents etc.
I'd be on them quick for this. That there is an expensive problem that won't go away without serious work.
its just gonna be easier and cheaper for me to swap in a junkyard axle...didnt notice the whine until right after the service and the whine is very noticeable and LOUD...i didnt see how they lifted the van but i think they need some really tall adapters for a two post lift since i got really low running boards...im going to NTB to tell them my problem tomorrow but it just sounds like a coincidence my problem began after they worked on it
I'm i hearing this right... lifting a Dana 60.. with a jack... bend it.. your way out to lunch... you can slide your diff.. over rocks... concrete and tree's before it bends.. at all. i mean there's extreme cases that yeah it could but no. it's not bent.. unless they lifted it way up.. and pushed it off the side of the post lift... bearings go... its what they're designed for.they wear so other things don't. maybe it was just its time... ( hangs head in somber say... dust in the wind.. )
I have an E350. Took it to the Ford dealer in Henderson NV to assess noise from rear diff. The two stooges who were assigned to look at it did just that; put a floor jack under the differential and jacked the rear end up to demonstrate to me that the LSD was working. I just had to replace the drivers side axle because it has worn unevenly.
If an axle housing was bent by putting a floor jack under it then there was something wrong with the housing to begin with. Either that or the van had 20,000 lbs of steel shot in the back of it.
No way you will ever bend an axle by lifting it in the middle of the housing.
I hope that you are right. On the other hand the van is a class B motorhome and carries all of our travel gear, photo and video equipment. It weighs around 10,000 pounds.

Think about all the stress exerted on the axle where the tube meets the housing while the vehicle is not moving. All the weight of the vehicle is transferred to the tube from the springs. If the springs are 14" inboard of the tire then all that torque is transferred onto that joint. That's a lot of torque, and it's static. Dynamic loads are many, many, many times stronger than static loads, and you get a dynamic load when you hit a pothole, for example. Instead of the weight of the vehicle (10,000#) you are looking at 200,000 to 300,000 lbs of momentary load.
If you don't bend an axle housing doing that, you sure as hell aren't doing it with a floorjack.
