Got a quick question. I've been having a griding noise in my rear axle. It gets louder at higher speeds. Yesterday, I went to my truck n there was oil leaking out of my seal around my back right tire. I took my tire off and my axle has some play in it. I was planning on doin the work myself but really don't know what all i need to replace. The Ford dealership here are a bunch of theives. Once before my truck leaked nearly all the oil out of the chunk through the gasket. Ever since then it's been making that noise. Any suggestions?
if the play is in and out thats probably normal. sounds like your gonna need a seal. if the play is up and down then your gonna need a bearing also. not hard to replace but check your axle also and make sure the race isnt damaged on the axle. be a good idea also to pull the cover off the rear and see if anything is wrong.
If you lost most of your diff oil then I suspect the carrier and pinion bearings are shot. You'll need to go thru the whole axle and fully service it (ie new bearings and seals plus as I recall the pinion uses a crush collar to set pinion bearing preload. If you are not familiar with this and don't have the correct tools available you would probably be best to get a shop to do it for you.
I just went through this with my Dad's Jeep. He let the oil leak out and complained about noise. His was a Dana 44 axle so all I had to do was replace the bearings. The Ford axles are a little more difficult, plus the axle bearing surface is the axle itself.
