Rear axle question

I took the rear end out of my 75. When it went one of the gears went through the side of the pumpkin.
I have always thought the pumkin and axle tubes were one solid piece but when I was looking at it there was oil seaping between the tubes and the pumking. Do they come apart? Can they be split so I could just change the pumpkin?

I do have a donor axle but it is rusty and missing one of the spring perches so I would prefer using the axle tubes on it.

I think the axle tubes are pressed into the differential case. You could theoretically remove the tubes, but you'd need a big press to put them back in. I don't know how you'd go about getting them apart.

Unless you have the tools, I would take it to a shop.

This is a Dana 60? Isn't the center section cast and the tubes steel? They are pressed and what, pinned or welded?

You may be better off to get an entire new axle drum to drum, as that center section is toast with the hole in it and why go through the teardown/reassembly....

Good luck

X2, go to a junkyard and pull a new housing, far cheaper than trying to repair something that is a dime a dozen
