hey guys I have a 89 f150 dual tanks and the previous owner said that the front fuel pump was bad, well I tried the front tank and it was fine, well last night i was driving home and it started to sputter and then died switched to the back tank and drove fine. will start and run for awhile on front tank but then dies and just runs really rough when under a load and then sputters and dies lol so my question is this, I'm goin to check fuel pressure soon but does this sound like a fuel pump or a fuel valve switch, or fuel pressure reg, or anything else, I don't wanna spend alot of money but I will buy a new pump if that is what it takes to fix it. Ill get back will psi ratings when possible.
Well if it runs on the rear pump fine but not the front, you should be able to rule out the pressure regulator as that is on the motor.
If you can switch back and forth between tanks and get accurate reads from each then I don't believe it is the tank switch either.
Its possible its the fuel pump, only reading pressure will help eliminate this, however if you can repeatedly start the truck and run off the front fine for awhile, then it sounds like the pump is ok.
Can you switch back to the front after running on the rear for awhile? Sounds like there may be gunk in the tank getting sucked into the pickup tube. Least thats my .02 without having more info available.
