I have a '94 F-150 V-8 5.0L Manual 2WD, and a while ago the transmission started giving me problems, now it's to the point where I lost 3rd and 4th gear and drive (minimally) on 1st, 2nd, and if I have to go into OD. What could be the cause to that problem? Has anyone run into that before? What are some solutions to correcting it or is it pretty much, take it into a trani shop and let them fix it kinda thing? Any type of help would be greatly appreciated.
Awesome, I have a pretty good back round in working on cars but haven't dealt with this tranny, but have a few buddies with Ford trucks as well so I will make sure to get with them to fix this issue, don't like my girl running like that.
What do you mean "lost drive"? Does the engine rev and the truck not move? Worn synchros would cause issues getting into gear when shifting but would not affect anything once the gear is engaged. If shift lever moves into position but you can't find the gears at all, it would be a shift fork issue.
I have 1st and 2nd gear, cannot engage 3rd and 4th gear, the shift lever will move up and down freely into 3rd and 4th without actually engaging into the shift.
Yes. Worn synchros will never cause a gear to go away completely.
Sounds like Eric has it right - worn or busted shift fork. You can pull the top cover off without dropping the tranny but you have to pull the carpet back far enough to get the panel off and then the top cover. The problem is that once the fork wears out usually the rest of it isn't too far behind.
How many miles on it? Do you rest your hand on the shifter while you're driving?
