Yep. The tips can mushroom. You should try to get them out now. If they came out on one side then chances are good for the other side. Hopefully they haven't swollen up yet. Once they do swell you can't get the whole GP out. The tip will break off and then you would need to pull the head.

Preventative maintenance is easier and less expensive than corrective maintenance.
