Yes you need oil with friction modifier. You can usually buy just the additive or some oils out there have it. It will say it has limited slip additive. Without it you will burnout the clutches really quickly
Yes, valvoline used to have friction modifier in it's durablend, but If you don't use friction modifier your clutches will chatter and probably not last real long. I prefer ford's oil and adding the additive, but any high grade gear lube will be fine. In a ranger you shouldn't have the loads or the heat that a big 1 ton makes so conventional oil be fine.
The axle code was h9b I looked it up it said ls. Another question can I take just the gears out of the diff and put them in a d 44 solid axle? Out of a 79
If you're speaking of putting the TTB 44 gears in a Dana 44 solid, yes, you should have no trouble, they should be the same, but remember to swap both ring and pinion if you do.
Ok, I guess I was wrong. I looked up that code and it does indeed show that both front and rear axles are LS. I had never even heard of that one before. It's generally not considered to be a good idea to have LS in the front because it can make steering unpredictable.

I can confirm that LS in the front makes steering unpredictable. In 4x4 on the road if you turn with LS it may want to just keep pushing you instead of turning.
Yes driveability suffers but if your LS isn't too tight it should let you corner. A factory unit shouldn't be that tight, like a trac loc or a powr lok, but I rebiult A f250 trac lok in a jeep wrangler from a 78 f250 in the rear when we did the axle swap ant that thing was tight, real tight with stock spring and clutches.
Yes the lucas stuff should work if it says it has ls additives. Then just use a 75-90 or depending how south you are 75-140 wouldnt hurt if you ever gonna use 4x4 for long periods
