Can an Older Steering column, say 73-76 be put in a 79?
I like the looks of the older column. it is thinner. but where it meets the dash there is a steel cover vs. the later Plastic cover. Wiring connector looks to be same.
I bleleive it will bolt right in, but can an older steel cover be used on the newer Dash. Or will there be some drilling?
I think the only difference is if you were dealing with a later column that was tilt. When I added the tilt it was no way I could use the metal cover I had since the tilt column is fatter. Otherwise I don't see why it wouldn't work. Some of the firewall gaskets are shaped different.
1978/79 steering columns are not the same as 1973/77.
The steering wheels, turn signal switches, neutral safety switches are different. The shift collars, upper steering column flanges, mast jackets (steering column shroud) and the steering shafts are also different as are the shift tubes.
1978/79 with a tilt wheel: The T/S switch is tilt wheel only as are the mast jackets and upper flanges.
The 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog is available on a CD from hipoparts.com. Get one a these, then start comparing part numbers.
Well Im sending the older style column to the paint shop.
It's not the column that I am concerned about as much as what holes need to be added to the dash in order to mount the older steel cover to the newer dash panel.
Or what would really suck, is if the new dash has a larger opening than the older dash and the steel cover won't fit at all. But I really doubt that.
I'll heading to the junk yard Saturday to compare dashes.
