After installing the engine into my truck and getting everything ready to go, I ran into a problem that I had never heard of. Any info would be appreciated.
I installed a new water pump when I rebuilt the engine (300-6). I noticed that the hub in the center of the new water pump was larger than the original one. No biggie, drill the pulley hole larger.
This weekend when I try to install the new belts, I realized that the new water pump is longer than the original and that my water pump pulley will no longer line up with the groove in the harmonic balancer and the alternator pulley.
Anyone ever heard of this? It's a '75 F-250 Crew Cab with a 300-6. I have the "correct" water pump arriving today. Don't know if it is any different or not, but the parts store guy said it might be the fix.
'similar thing happened to me...in my case, the clutch fan - for whatever reason. ALWAYS take the old (whatever) one in (if you can) and carefully compare them - bolt holes, length, width, height...etc. There wasn't a good explanation but the NAPA guys got me the "right" one after they took back the "listed" one... could be you're dealing with a prior owner's engine swap and your " '75" pump is actually an '80, '85, or whatever.
