I'm about to remove the push-button bw1356 from behind my E4OD and swap in the manual unit I rebuilt. When I unbolt the transfercase from the transmission output adapter, is fluid going to come out of there? If so how much can I expect?
OK thanx. I heard there was a ford recall that involved the transmission leaking into the TC and overfilling it or something. I assume there must be some kind of seal inside the transmission adapter for the output shaft. I'll check it while i'm in there.
There is not a seal out of the back of the Transmission, but there is a 'hump' in the adapter. If you have shaken the truck around, climbed it at extreme angles there may be a little fluid at the front of the transfer case. BTW if the front transfer case seal goes bad the transmission can push fluid into it.
If you look at this picture, right at the beginning of the splines on the shaft you can see a flat spot at about 45 degree angle on the bottom that holds in fluids. An automatic has more fluid inside of it when it isn't running, when the motor is running the torque converter gets filled up.
