Transfer Case Input/Front seal replacement help

Noticed some fluid on the bottom of the Ex a few months ago and have been watching it since. Drained and refilled with the XL-12 fluid at the time and based on what I can see the likely culprit is the input seal on the transfer case. I have searched high and low both here and via the almighty google with little info to be found.

Anyone done this and is it simply remove transfer case, replace input seal, reseal case connection, and refill?

Thanks!

There is no "input seal" on our transfer cases.

I know because I went to NAPA to get a input seal when this happened to me. They couldn't tell what I needed either, so I bought the 2 that they said it might be. Didn't need either one. Both seals I bought were for 2wd vehicles.

It's kinda open to the transmission.
If it's leaking between transfer case and transmission, than its the seal that mates between the two.

Easy fix, pull transfer case, clean surfaces and install a new gasket and reinstall transfer case.

Don't really understand Fords position on "special" fluid for our transfer cases. Since the transmission fluid can mix with it I put amsoil trans fluid in both trans and TC. Amsoil told me it meets specs for both. At least I have the same fluid in both. Guess that is good....don't really know how the xl-12 interacts with a different transmission fluid.

Also check your transmission fluid, it could be low as it will leak from that seal too.

When I swapped my trans out a few months ago, the only seal or gasket there was was a little paper one on the mounting flange between trans and t-case.

When chasing leaks don't forget the fluid will continually flow downhill, and if you're driving it routinely the airflow underneath will spread it as well. You may need to spend some more time diagnosing and chasing the leak.
