i have a 1986 ford f150 and i was wondering if i had to change the actual key switch if im going to put a full new ignition system in it ...such as the distributor and ignition coil and module...email me and ill go into further detail and give pics....i really need help with this ....jagman_18@hotmail.com
No, you don't need to change the key switch. I did the same thing on my '82 and didn't touch the switch.
Having said that, what engine do you have? I ask because the 351W for that year, if I remember correctly, had the DSII ignition system. So, if yours is a 351W, unless the ignition system is bad it shouldn't need to be changed out.
When I rebuilt my engine I put in a new ignition system and distributor and it didn't even occur to me to change out the key. So, the short answer is, no, you don't have to change out the switch.
the truck is a 1986 ford f150 ...it had a straight 6 in it and now it has a 302 in it from a 1979 f150....but i had planned on doing the duraspark swap .....just changing the distributor and ignition coil and module would work right ?

Under this situation, the same basic proceedure for a DS2 conversion on the 300 would apply, but the engine wiring and dist would need to be for a 302.
Since the engine is from a 79, the dist should be good to go. Not sure if the engine harness from the 79 would be 100% "plug and play" on an 86, but it should be similar.
im going to do the swap in a week or 2 ....maybe 3 ....and i will put before and after pics on here to show you guys how i done for my first truck ....i only paid $450 for it so i think putting $150 more into it will b okay ....also later on i want to convert it to 4X4......does anyone have any tires that will fit the 1986 f150 that they will sale cheap or give to me ....i hate to ask for stuff but im 19 and i work all the time and barley have the money to pay insurance and gas and other bills so if anyone can help me out with that then i would b very grateful
Posting pics can be done several ways. Easiest, upload to someplace like photobucket, and insert the direct link into a post. The pic will "automagically" appear in the thread if you use the "IMG code" option that appears when you select the photo at PB's site.
Example:
Direct link: http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h...18/Jun2215.jpg You have to click to see the pic. Or, you can do it this way....
IMG code:
The only difference between those 2 items, is the pic has "[IMG] & [/IMG]" added at the ends of the link.
ok so the only problem im having now is finding the 2 wires that come from the ignition switch to the module....on the schematic it says red and white ....but i cant seem to find the ones i need...and also one of the wires on the coil is suppose to run to the ignition and i cant figure it out .....where will i find the right ones coming from the ignition?? maybe someone take a picture of there 1986 ford f150 and put it on here and make sure it shows the wires from the ignition please asap
i think i have run into a problem ....i have pictures of the stuff i am going to post ....but i really dont think the wiring in the 1986 f150 6 cyl. will match the wiring on the 1979 302 8 cyl engine.....
