"What about a pair of 2 barrels on that intake? It may seem as though I'm a little stuck on it but the fact of the matter is yes, I am, it didn't coastm me any cash outlay, and other than the 4 barrel factory intake on the 360 in my truck it's what fits the budget right now."
You would be far better off with the factory 4v intake IMHO.
makes total sense..... on a truck that *needs* "horsepower for towing"
The obvious choice is a 2x4 intake.... of course for economic reasons you'd use 2, 2v carbs.
The idea behind the pair of 2 barrels is from various aspects it kinda almost makes sense and I've never seen it done before. I already have the carbs, as well as 1 4160 Holley 600cfm, the idea is to set the linkage up the linkage on the old tri-power GTO from the mid sixties, so it runs primarily off the back carb and when you romp on it the front one opens up. I did discover this morning when the truck wouldn't start for work and I had to shoot a little ether down the carb it has a Performer on it right now, not a stick intake, looked like it from the amount of crud on the motor, but it's an edelbrock. And no, the intake I traded for isn't a performer RPM dual quad, they don't make one, it's a now discontinued performer dual quad.
i think the point that the guys are trying to make is that the setup you're using is geared towards horsepower- but what you actually need (for towing) is torque.
running 2bbl carbs on top on a dual-quad intake isn't going to make it perform like a standard 4bbl intake.
i feel your pain on the budget issue- but i think the consensus is that you can use the stuff you've *already* got, and come out with a better engine combo than what you're planning.
convert it to 390, use the stock intake off the 360, find an Autolite 2100 to put on it, sell the dual-quad, and you'll have more torque, and extra cash in your pocket.
the tri-power GTO is way cool, but nobody was towing with them.
i know noone was towing with a tri-power gto, but the was lots of guys towing with a 2 barrel, and I figure that 1 2 barrel ought to keep it mildly fed, however, I did some horse trading and came up with a 600cfm Holley 4160 with the 4250 metering block conversion done to it soI'm going to run that one. Truck is still going to converted to a 416, but that spare 390 that's donating it's block and rods is going to eventually get built as a 390 dual quad for the track if I can get my buddy to part with the 67 mustang bheind his barn
Update, Autozone crank arrived was magnafluxed (looked great according to my machinist) measured -.002" and was not a reweld so subbsequently balanced with the rest of the rotating assembly, stock 390 rods resized, magnafluxed (clean bill of health on them), and weight matched to the Ebay pistons, which now have to go back. Seller said he'd swap them out for me, block had been rebored at some point in time +.030" and it is going to take another +.010" to clean up. Went with the standard Edelbrock performer cam, going to use my intake that's on the truck now and the 4160 with the 4150 metering blocks on it. Debating on the 50cc accelerator pumps as to whether or not I need them, but carb has 30cc in it now. Stupid question but what size are the Cobra Jet valves? Haven't started on the heads yet but they're getting port work, resurfaced, and hardened seats as well as a good valve job and bronze guides.
