'97 Explorer v8 allwheeldrive

Hi all, I usually linger in the diesel forum but was wondering if anyone here has tinkered with the electrics involving the transfer case. Specifically, putting in a manual overide to put in 4x4? Anyone done this?
Thanks, Bill

So does your Explorer have AWD currently, or is it the Auto 4WD? If the auto system, yes, I've read of folks wiring in mods to that. If it's AWD, you have a center differential and will not be able to get true 4WD without changing out the transfer case. I'm not sure what else would be involved.

I was under that impression too, but I've heard of some having V8 with 2WD. That sounds like fun, but I can't say that I've ever seen one.

If you have the AWD transfer case, there's no way to convert it to 4WD other than to swap out the transfer case and probably other pieces as well.

Mmm, I wonder, I also own a '93 explorer that's becoming a rusting hulk in the driveway. It might be time to cannibalize it if the transfer case would work.

I don't think it will work... different splines on the output shaft. A t-case from an F150 will be needed.

I may scrap the idea then, I heard it doesn't make much difference in gas mileage anyway.
