3.31 Gearing Problem?????

So I go in to order my new 2012 F-350 with the 6.7 diesel and the dealer calls me back and says you CAN'T get the snow plow prep package with the 3.31 gearing!!!! I can build it online so I thought it was possible. Somebody please tell me the salesman is wrong on this one. Doesn't make any sense that you could tow 14,000 pounds with 3.31 gears but can't plow snow!!!! Anybody?

Dealer is correct...

F-250/350 SRW 6.7L w/ 17" or 18" wheels are automatically bumped from 3.31 to 3.55 as standard when ordering Snow Plow Prep Package (473), Camper Package (471), Heavy Service Front Suspension Package (67H) or Heavy Service Package for Pickup Box Delete (63R).

All things considered 3.31 vs. 3.55 & 18’s with a 70 series tire and 20’s with a 65 series tire the difference is negligible at best.
I went through the same thing could get the options I wanted with 3.31 gears. I bought a FX4 with 3.31 and 18’s. Getting a set of stock 20’s tomorrow.
Honestly if I would have known how minor the difference was I would have got the 20’s and 3.55 to start with. Live and learn.
But I guess I did come out a little to the good, with the 20’s and the 3.31 I’ll be getting a little better on fuel, but not enough to ever pay for itself

Looks like 2 tires sizes in the 18's came OEM Conti had the 65 and Michelin had the 70

Ended up ordering my new truck today. Good news is that I CAN get the 3.31 rear axle with plow prep!!! Bad news is that I cannot get the 3.31 electronic locking rear end with plow prep, which after thinking about it I probably would never have used the locking rear end anyways. Also I am coming from what I consider one of the worst gas motors made the 5.4 triton and I plowed with that. This new diesel with 3.31 gears is gonna feel like I'm plowing with a tank!!!!! And the towing capacity with 3.31 gears is exactly the same as 3.55 gears so I don't see what disadvantage the 3.31 gears would be. It's gonna be a long 6-10 weeks

I wish the 3.73 was available on the SRW. This is the first Ford I've had that didn't have 4.10s.
The 3.31 and 3.55s seem to get the same MPG so why not get the 3.55s for the power advantage.

Conti has 65 and 70's. I have the 70's. Terrible tire in snow.

The 3.31 gearing mathematically should produce a 7% better mpg advantage over the 3.55 and I don't think that I will ever see the power advantage from the 3.55 because the most I tow is about 14000 lbs and the 3.31 will pull that around like it isn't even there.

is the 3.31 you ordered then a LS or open rear-end? I didnt think there was any LS left except in the DRW.

Not sure I would want an open diff, if that is indeed the case without the option of manually locking the diff when needed.

Well went to dealer to sign papers and he told me he couldn't build the 3.31 non electronic locking rear differential with the snow prep package. Very disappointed right now. He is speaking with a Ford rep who is higher up than people in the dealership to try and get some answers and hopefully he comes back and tells me he can do it because I see no reason why it shouldn't be possible. Anybody out there have 3.31 gears with snow plow prep??

Just get the 3.55 and 20" tires and enjoy.
Mileage is almost the same, and I'm sure you will be wearing a big smile.
