Hey guys Need some help I've got a 81 f100 straight 6 I think it's a 300 but. I'm going to have to replace my lower ignition switch an was wondering if anyone knew how to do it an had any pics an if anyone knew what kind of job it's gonna be.
I'm guessing that the reason you've not gotten responses is that we don't understand. Is the problem only that the engine cranks slowly like the battery is dead, and only does that every once in a while?
If so, that isn't consistent with an ignition switch problem. The ignition switch either works or doesn't work, so if the engine is cranking at all the switch is working. That's because the ignition switch activates a large relay, aka starter solenoid, and it is that device that provides power to the starter. So, if the starter is working at all the ignition switch did its job.
Possible problems of intermittent slow cranking are a bad connection on the battery cable, starter cable, or ground. Another is a bad solenoid, which is the round device just behind the battery, but if it is causing the slow cranking it will be HOT so you should check it when that happens. And yet another cause is a bad starter.
I would check the battery cables and all connections from the battery to the starter, including the ground to the engine. If any of those are loose or corroded you should clean them and/or replace the cable.
Im sorry for the confusion guys. My father in law posted under this account unsure how to use the site. Let me clerify an also thank you for the replies. He thought it was the lower ignition swith due to last month the solenoid going out an after replacing, the truck would start on its own without keys in igniton. He took it to the shop an they fixed it that by putting a heavy duty solenoid on it usually used on heavy duty winches an they also replaced the starter. Now and its was also doing it before but he wants it fixed but the motor is slow to crank dragging like a dead battery an finally cranks.
With your replies i will now tell him to check all connections an the ground to the motor. If not this are there anymore suggestions?
