I am not sure how to describe this so bear with me. This f250 recently is cofusing me...went to leave the yard and as I nudged up the throttle I heard what I can only describe as a balloon going thru the exhaust...it restricted the power and I released the throttle. It doesn't do this at idle. It did it in forward and reverse. After shutting it off and restarting it gave me no problems while I brought rock back home. I used it periodically the next week and had no problems. About 1 week ago and I went to take it to my mechanic (to determine location of diesel leak) and fought this restriction problem for at least 15 minutes. Shutting off the pickup didn't work. Eventually it quit but I don't know how or why? It sounds like something is slugging the engine...?
How cold is it where you live? That sounds like the exhaust back pressure valve closing. You can unhook it if you want to, there is a 2 pin electrical connector under the turbo that actuates it.
It really sounds to me like your EBPV is sticking. There is essentially a flapper valve in the outlet side of the turbo called an Exhaust Back Pressure Valve (EBPV). It is designed to close when the engine is cold and aid in warmup, but they tend to stick and or close when they shouldn't. Unplug the two wire connector under the intake side of the turbo and I'll bet you don't have this issue again. You can just leave it unhooked if you like. Many of us have them unhooked (or in many cases, eliminated altogether) without seeing any issue from it.
They are supposed to cycle when the engine starts up and when they start to have issues they often close even when it isn't cold outside, or while you're driving. Unplug that bugger and I bet your issue is solved.
Just an Update: Picked up the PSD tonight and got one to two blocks with same problems before I stopped, grabbed light, and unhooked the connector for the EBPV. Voila...no more problems. Thanks again.
