first off, i have a 95 F150, 2wd with a 300/M5OD with a hurst shifter. I love it. I do no towing or hauling with it, so i like the quick shifts. I know its not a huge horsepower beast, but it does the job well. I change fluid once a year in it. it's always coming out clean, so i think i may stretch the fluid out to once every two years (i put on 15K a year) I have heard of people running Syncroshift fluid in it instead of the Dextron III ... has anyone done it or heard of it?? also, my daily driver 87 has the old, cumbersome 4 speed (with the 4th gear overdrive) that does the job well, but i miss the 5 gears thing. will a similar tranny out of a 92-96 swap behind the 87's 300 straight six?? i dont see why i wouldnt?
If your `87 is 4x2 you would need to look for a trans from `91 or earlier to get the speedo port. If 4x4 it doesn`t matter as then your speedo cable is driven from the transfer case.
Yep the M5OD came out in 1987 as an option I believe. That or 1988.
You will need a 87-91 tranny for the speedo cable hole in the tranny, as the 92+ trucks use electronic speedos using the rear speed sensor in the axle.

I knew that ... i was just having a brain fart ...
I have been using that, but i've heard whispers of people in more performance-oriented applications using Syncroshift for quicker, smoother shifts nad improved wear characteristics. Wanted to know if anyone here had heard of that ...

Nothing here....Just was wondering.....Personally, I'd just use Mercon....In case of any premature wear, etc due to wrong type of fluid...

I have been using Mercon, if you read my first post, i stated that i change it every year ... i'm just looking to see if there was a better alternative. in 1960, there was only cheap, crude oils on the market, but if i owned a 1960 F100 with a rebuild motor, i wouldn't run the same crud they did back then, i'd look for a better alternative. It's the same theory.
