FICM

Quick question the truck is starting fine... I have a scanguage that is hooked up reading the voltage on the FICM. When I start the truck the voltage runs about 42 volts until the glowplugs turn off and the alternator kicks in. It then runs on up to 48v and stays pretty consistent. Does this sound right or does the FICM need to be worked on... Just curious your thoughts as I try to make this truck as reliable as possible...,

Thanks
Daniel

Rule of thumb is "under 45v, time to fix"

I would look at the condition of the batteries first.

Check the battery voltage at startup until the glow plugs turn off and the alternator turns on. If it is low enough it might be bringing down the FICM. Also check the battery and ground connections.

It is most likely the FICM, though.

Mine just started doing this also, 42-43v after a long park overnight.
In is fine once it is warmed up and I start her up.
Maybe I need to start saving for a Swamps 58v unit.

I've read some posts where the 58v FICM mod isn't particularly helpful or reliable.

Really, I have not seen that.
Maybe I should just do the 48v unit.

Ricson, I did some research regarding Ed @ FICM Repair. He genuinely cares about customer service, and his prices are fair, especially considering what he does to each unit. I am going to use him moving forward. Thanks for the tip, reps given.

Andy, I had a couple friends do the 58V units, neither lasted long. The heat built by those 'upgraded' units was crazy! Not sure if the heat was the mitigating factor in the failure, but I am sure it didn't help.

We don't suggest the higher voltage modifications for precisely the reasons stated here.

The easiest and certainly most reliable path to better cold starting is migrating to 5W40 synthetic oil. The difference is night and day, especially in those cases where stiction has already begun to set in.

Thanks for all the positive comments about our service, guys. It is much appreciated.

Ed I don't know you personally.... yet. I tend to thoroughly research businesses prior to becoming a customer, and once I do, and they pass the test, I keep those business relationships forever. You will hear from me in the future. Take care.
