So i'm in the process of rebuilding a stock 352, and have a question about upgrading it. I know there are a lot of threads covering rebuild questions like this, but i havent found one that answers this question. If i am correct, it is possible to put in a crankshaft and piston rods from a 428 FE, which would increase the total CID to 400. But what i dont know, is will i have to upgrade anything else in the engine to compensate? Like pushrods, or valve springs or anything like that? Im a teenager, and have had limited experience in this so far, so any advice would help. Thanks guys.
Short answer is NO. The stock 428 rods will hit the sides of the small bores on the 352.
From the Ford Muscle Parts Book:
"You need to use special non-Ford pistons (read expensive) to maintain correct deck height or you can use 390PI rods for medium performance applications. The 428CJ/427 rods are too wide for the 4.00" bore."
ok, thanks for the answers. thats all i needed to know. the engine is going in a 64 f100, and will be mostly just driven to school and back every day. i got it for free from a mechanic who just had it sitting around. they had already reconditioned the heads, honed the cylinders, and put in new pistons (with rods), camshaft, and valve springs. I was just looking for a way to add some extra power without breaking the bank. (i've got a small budget). so it looks as if i'm going to be keeping it stock after all.
If it's going to be a daily driver, school etc. more power equals more fuel. Keep that in mind if your on a budget.
This is patently NOT true. A 600 CFM 4 barrel with vacuum secondaries will out MPG a 2 barrel every time under normal driving conditions. If you are a lead foot, neither is gonna give you decent mpg.
Running a 450 hp engine very easy will get you better mpg than beating the crap out of a 150 horsepower engine will.
More horsepower only cost you money when you use it.
Since you know everything Bear, where does he state that he has a 2 barrel. We are trying to help a kid on a limited budget with limited knowledge that uses this thing for school etc, not someone trying to conquer the 1/4 mile.
hey, i appreciate both opinions guys. no need to argue.
the truck does have a different 352 in it right now, with a 4bbl holly carb (dont know the cfm at the moment) and i get decent gas mileage. but i'm not worried about paying for gas (if i was, i'd have bought a honda civic) and i only drive the truck around town.
