Steering issue?
I noticed the other day in a parking lot, I was making a very sharp turn at a decent speed when I noticed a "bump bump bump bump........" in the steering. It only happens when the steering wheel is "hard over" or all the way left or right, and at a decent speed (turning as hard as I can at a slow speed is fine). The "bump" seems to occur on an interval which correlates to the rotation of the wheel. I get a subtle metallic noise along with the bump in the steering. I can only produce this when I travel at a moderate to fast pace and turn like hell which means I do not notice this hardly ever because, generally an F350 isn't a sports car when it comes to handling. I was engaged in 4x4 high recently to get over some rough terrain, (recent enough that it may have to do with this problem...). Is this normal for 6.0L's from 04' and if not, i'm really hoping someone here is familiar with the issue, (crossing my fingers for a ford tech).
Thanks in advance guys
I applaud your response "69" jc, apparently in my post I bragged about running from the cops and how I got pissed when my f350 wouldn't handle like a muscle car. For god's sake I even said in the post that I know F350's are not made for handling like sports cars....
And when did I ever post a detailed account of my "driving habits" or more importantly my "expectations"? Hmmm expectations, really dude? Your ignorance is at fault, not my non-existent expectations.
Any Real help would be greatly appreciated.
All of the ball joints and tie rod ends were dry, pushing them in and out they made a clunk noise (metal on metal). The U-Joints would not even take grease so we installed new ones as well. Ball joints and u-joints are the 2 items that I would guess are causing your noise. Again just a guess. Changing all these parts made a huge difference in his truck.
BTW- I am a member on other forums as well, and you won't find a finer group of helpful folks than on FTE. I would not take comments too personal!
You need to get the front up on some jack stands. Then make sure you can turn the front axle u-joint separate from the wheel on each side. If the u-joint turns with the wheel and you can't prevent that, then the hub is still locked. Try turning the hub dial from auto to unlock and back a few times to see if it will unlock.
If one of your hubs is locked, you might need a hub service. I believe there is an article in the Super Duty tech folder for servicing 05 and new hub locks. You might also want to get a hand vacuum pump/gauge and do some testing of the hub and vacuum lines to make sure there are no leaks.
While it is up would also be a good time to inspect the ball joints for movement. Have someone reef up and down on the wheel and see if the joints move. They shouldn't. Also check the tire rod ends. With the truck back on the ground have someone turn the wheel and look for play in any steering joints.
