I had this same problem a year ago and a front end alignment took care of it. Now it's back. Here is a video that you can hear the noise: YouTube - Steering Wheel Creak
Here are all of the new components that have been replaced within the last 5,000 miles:
Upper ball joints, wheel bearings inner and outer both sides, calipers, routers, brakes (200 miles ago), universal joints, shocks. The noise is coming from the steering rod, I think that's what it is called, it is the part that comes through the firewall from the steering wheel. When I turn it to the left it produces the creaking noise just like in the video only louder. Advice is appreciated, this group has been very helpful to me. I love my 97 ranger with 72000 miles, but I am mechanically challenged. Thanks again,
Ken aka/Fawey
Tie rod end maybe?? But before I started throwing parts at it I'd get under there and look.Maybe have someone move the steering wheel back and forth while you get under there and listen for creaks and squeaks. Also check sway bar bushings and end links.
