So I'm driving to work and I see what I think is water hose or black tubing in someones TRASH. Stop and it is welding cable with an ancient looking paper tag that says 2/0 AWG 57' NEW and there are two of them. Right into the back of the truck. It was in the TRASH.
So my question is what do I have. I'm not a welder, don't know any welders, remember it was in the TRASH. What is it worth to a welding shop, could I just walk in and sell it, or do I just scrap it? Remember it was in the TRASH. I just don't understand some people and their wasteful ways. And I guess junking it would be wasteful. Your thoughts.
Thanks
It is something that any welder with a stick machine can use.
I would imagine most shops would buy it, or if you know anyone that welds you could pass on some good fortune. It would be way better than scrapping it.
Selling to a welding shop might be tricky. These guys get ripped off all the time, cables especially since copper is worth money. They might see someone walking into their shop with cables for sale as potentially selling someone else's cables, and react in an unpleasant manner.
On the other hand, copper is worth quite a bit, and 2/0 cable has a nice bit of weight to it. Strip the insulation off and it's worth even more.
I would suggest pretty much what the others are saying. Jumper cables if they're flexible enough. Otherwise CLEAN copper has been running over $3/lb around here -- probably the same where you are. Strip off the insulation and take it in.

Build ya a small fire...TOss the cables in....Let the insulation, etc melt off....Job done...Collect money....
They'd make great power cables for a winch. I plan on running 2/0 or better yet 1/0 cables for my 12,000 winch whenever I get around to building my bumper.
Told my son about my find and he said he was interested in learning welding.(good for him maybe he can teach me) Guess I'll keep them as it appears that welding cable is in the neighborhood of about $3 a foot.
booster cables or replacement battery cables far better than the cheap crappy factory cables. whenever i need a new battery cable i cut myself a piece off my roll of similar cables.
Selling a NEW set of cables for copper scrap is a waist, I would give them to a welder before I did that. I doubt any welding shop would give someone a hard time for offering up for sell a set of cables.
I picked up a set at a garage (estate) sale last summer from an old mechanic that had died, the ladies that were in charge of the estate had no clue what his tools and equipment was worth. I asked about the cables and they told me 50 cents, I gave her 20 bucks and we were both tickled.
