fuel injection info wanted

I'm in the process of putting a 88 351 windsor and tranny in my 66 and wondering about the egr and smog pump. Would if affect the computer if they were discarded. This is a mass air system engine pulled out of a ford van that was a real good runner.

One thought was affecting the O2 sensor in the exhaust. I don't know what kind of feedback it gives the computer

It will trip the check check engine light but wont affect the O2 sensor or fuel ratios.

Double check as an 88 truck/van application should be a speed density system unlike the 5.0 mass air car app?

My 88 472 is speed density and is the same computer for 5.8 or 7.5 and uses a MAP sensor same as the van, No MAF involved.

You are correct, it's the speed density system. I did find some info on fuel injection systems online. It said the O2 sensor is ignored by the computer under hard load or full throttle but output from it is used to make corrections at cruise.

The next question is eliminating the air pump which injects air into the exhaust ports to reduce NO emissions. I guess if the O2 sensor is gone it could be eliminated also.

I left the EGR in place on my EFI. I removed the air pump and all the paraphernalia. I get the egr differential pressure codes thrown but it does not lite the MIL. Runs fine.

What are you going to do for a harness?

It's not a 351, but on my speed density EFI 300 I took off the air pump and catalytic converters (must be removed if you remove the air pump), but I left the O2 sensor and the EGR in place, and it runs great.

I tried it for a while without the EGR, but it didn't seem to run as good and fuel mileage suffered so I put it back.

Thanks for all the input everybody.

I have the wiring harness from the 88 econoline and put the computer behind the glovebox. We cut a hole for the harness and it was long enough to reach. The 88 had a C6 so it bolted right up to the frame. I haven't got arround to the throtle linkage yet. I plan on using a aftermarket fuel pump but I do have the 2 tank fuel sistem from the van.

I put a '91 Mustang 5.0 (mass air) engine and T-5 trans in my '64 Falcon. Got rid of both smog pump and EGR. Am running O2 sensors right close to the end of Hooker Super Comp headers. Engine runs great. I'm sure it would trip a "check engine light" if I had one so I elected not to have one. Been running this set-up for more than 10 years with no problems. Good luck with whatever you decide.
