Thermostat?

Question: started in 36 degrees ambient temperature and left *FOR EVER* what is the highest temp you would expect to see on the digital readout for oil temp? I'll give you a hint: I'm disappointed and cold.

I started my truck and let it idle while I finished breakfast yesterday. When I got in the EGTs were only 198° . So doubt the oil temp could get any higher than that and would be something lower than that. There is not much heat generated at a lean idle. Now if you start to move the truck and get a little richer fuel mix, Then your EGTS jump up and the coolant and oil would warm up.

Total WAG - oil temp 120 F. ??? Diesels don't generate much heat idling.

Mine idled for almost 15 minutes at 36 or so this morning. Only got up to 89F. But within 5 miles of towing a small trailer it was hitting 200F.

145 degrees. I kind of figured that diesels (this is my first) would be slow to warm given the lean idle but sheesh - can't they put a cotton-picking thermostat in these things that will get them up to operating temp? I can just see it now: when I finnaly 'ditch' it on the Interstate given one of Indiana's finer weather days I'm going to freeze to death.

That an all of a sudden I seem to have developed a nasty (low amplitude) vibration at idle that seems like the motor is sitting solid against some other part of the truck. I'm starting to get disappointed for $60K.

You could do the high idle mod to get hotter temps faster.

Also, I seem to remember an old post about a loose motor mount(or something else loose in the engine compartment) that was causing a weird vibration noise. I memory serves, there were a few members that had that issue.

You won't freeze. I started mine in -1F before staying at a hotel in Kansas. Not plugged in either.

within a couple miles It was pushing big heat. got to work it to produce the heat.

Yes guys, driving down the road is just fine. I'm just surprised by how many 'interesting differences' exist between these and gassers.

In all honesty I can't believe it took me so long to come over to the dark side. I wish, I could in a few words share a lifetime's experience with turbocharging/supercharging gas motors and their inherent fragility (even after you put pistons/rods/cranks, the block is still weak) only to finally arrive at a vehicle that has an 'appropriate' amount of torque right from the factory.

Primary and secondary cooling system, 2 each. Because of the radiator issues in the 6.4, the thermostats open at different temperatures to prevent "thermal shock" when a large rush of coolant reaches hot components. Effective for that, but side effect is frozen owners.

This is where the rapid heat option comes in handy (for frozen owners) because it's an electrical heater coil, correct?
