Does anyone know what the typical oil temp is when hot, I plan on purchasing a rare earth magnet to retrieve some of my metal particles that is coming out with my oil. As I understand anything greater than 170F will demagnitize the magnet.
Since the thermostat is probably 195, it seems likely that the oil could go over 170. I'm curious as to your source on the demagnetizing. I am surprised to hear of anything like that happening at such a relatively low temperature.
Sources that sell these magnets indicate that they will start to demagnetize at 175 degrees F. They recommend ceramic or another type which I forget that will withstand much more heat.
Minimum oil temps are around 180, still higher than the 175 allowed for that type of magnet. Since our trucks do not have oil temp gauges, it is difficult to tell. On the airplanes I fly, it tends to run about 240.
If you want a powerful magnet that can withstand a good amount of heat, then get ahold of a bad hard drive from a computer and remove the two magnets in there. I always try to go the improvised route when a technology is questionable (I hate to waste money). These magnets are quite strong and very cheap since just about anyone will give you a dead hard drive. I often use these magnets on a string at work to recover tools from the deep, dark recesses of the steel mill where I work.
