Hello Guys,
Here is my 89 F150, with only 60,000 it's about to become a daily driver. I plan to change the tires and wheels and would like to go wider. Can anyone tell me a good tire/wheel combo. I was wondering if a 15 x 10 wheel would fit good and what size tire would work without rubbing. I would like to give the truck a more off road look but do not plan on putting a lift kit on it.
Thanks for any advice.
Charlie
I'd find some nice chrome argent style I think they call them ( five hole) from a 92-96 f150 there steel so usually cheap and never corode like aluminum due to weights and stand up in winter and go.with 265/75/15 or 31x10.5x15
I would stick with 15x7.5 or 15x8 wheels and go with 31x10.50. A 15x10 is way too wide for a 31 10.50. Its more suitable for a 12.50 width. Also the extra wide wheels will adversely affect handling and increase wear on suspension components. Cool brick nose by the way. I like the color.
My just acquired '88 F150 has 32 x 11.5-15s and I hate them. They rub way too often. I'm going down to 265/70R15s. 31 x 10.5-15 has nearly the same widths as the 265s, but nearly an inch more diameter, cost about $5 more.
I just found these on Craigslist for $100. They are 15" from a 92 F150. I would need to get the two rear caps. He said they were 7 or 7.5" wide. From what you guys have told me, I'd be better off with this size wheel and I can still get a off road looking tire. Any reason I should not get them?
Ain't to bad of price I'd deduct pair of center caps and lug nuts ( trying to talk him down) I picked up my second pair of rims $60 with only rear center caps
Auto recyclers and IIRC LMC truck should have the center caps. F150 ones are fairly easy to come by; the deep rear ones for the F250's and F350's with the aluminum Alcoas are the ones people kill for and steal. $94 new from the dealer!
O and a hint take some mothers Chrome polish or my favorite malco Chrome polish and 0000 steel wool and go to town warning sun glasses might be needed no one can Belive my rims are stock they look so good sorry got to brage
Well I am going to meet with the seller tomorrow. If they are in good shape I will buy them, I went to the tire store today and saw the tires they will be fine. And yes they will be polished before they go on the truck!
Thanks for you help,
Charlie
@ Charlie57: first of all Nice Truck, excellent condition for the vintage, great find. I went from 235's with factory metal rims to 265/75 and got stock aluminum rims from a 96 xlt and it made all the difference in the world. the tires that are on there noe are getting a bit thin. I bought them and the rims installed for $200 providing I traded in the steel rims and smaller tires to a local guy who parts out F series trucks. It really gave the truck a more aggressive look and stance. I am replacing the tires with the same size Goodyear wrangler silent armor. $167 each installed with free front end alignment, free road service, flat fixes & rotations from Town Fair tire. Every company seems to make a good "hybrid" AT tire that is also pretty efficient and quiet on the road. My truck is also a daily driver and this was a must for me. All the free services and getting a firm installed price was what made me go with the Goodyear's @ Town fair.
Also I think you should look into a set of diamond plate rail guards, they are inexpensive, easy to install an will keep those top rails from getting junked up, chipped and rusting. As I have used my truck as a daily driver I found that they enabled me to load many thing from the side of the bed that I would not have done without them. A set of good cargo anchors are also very, very useful. Good luck and once again NICE TRUCK!
I have those same rims, and yeah I got the center caps from LMC someone mentioned, also got 33's wrapped around them. I think they look real nice one they are cleaned up.
I bought the wheels for $80 tonight. I'll clean and polish them this weekend. The story behind the truck is my father in law purchased new in 89 and seven years ago he gave it to my son when he was 10. My son has never had any interest in the truck other then it belonged to his grandfather. His grandfather passed away a year and a half ago, on my birthday. We bought my son a 98 Mustang and I now have the truck. I just want to put some personal touches on it.
I need to buy a spare wheel holder, all these years the spare has just laid in the bed.
LMC truck has the under-bed spare tire carrier, if your truck is equipped for it. Otherwise JC Whitney has one that mounts inside the bed off to the side. It makes the tire more accessible than crawling under the truck. I just removed my spare tire carrier and put the spare in the bed- it was rusted in pretty well, and I'd hate to imagine taking it down in inclement conditions or at night. Most people who bed-mount theirs put them behind the drivers head, it creates less of a blind spot that way.
I see that the chrome part of the wheels I bought are actually replaceable. Does anyone know if I can remove these pieces and paint the wheel and put these back in or will I damage them getting them out?
