Using Backspacing to Fit Bigger Tires

It seems to be pretty well established that a 31" tire will fit comfortably under a 2wd 91-96 F150. My own measurements have confirmed that as a fact.

The thing that is frustratingly absent from every single one of those numerous threads (not just here on FTE) is any mention of wheel backspacing... it's never mentioned. Stock wheels or aftermarket it just never comes up and I consider that to be the most important measurement of all, assuming people know to relate tire size to rim diameter and width.

Here's the subject:
... a 93 with ugg-o-rama 16" directionals... they must go.

1G Lightenings had 17x8 rims w 4.5" of backspacing and 275/60 17 tires. All of the pictures I've seen has those 8" wide 17s pushed out to the corners but still able to tuck the wide 30" tall tires (same diameter as a 235/75 15). My measurements say that my current wheels are 16x9 and have 4.5" of backspacing but the rears are still looking pretty skinny while the fronts (same size but 10mm smaller tire, 245 and 235s, respectively) look to be almost flush w the wheelwell.

?s:
Is the front a wider track? Can you successfully stagger the wheel/tire combo for a balanced look? Why do the Ls pull it off w the same size wheel/tire combo all around? Why are the Ls so tucked-in and badass with only a minor drop (~1/2) and 30" tires?

I have a plan for this truck, but it's a daily driver, not a project. Stance (stock front, drop the rear w shackles... DUN! Okay, a bumper and I may give it a scuff-n-hose paint job), wheels/tires, The End. I've kinda got to get this right on the first shot so I can get back on my 76.

The "plan", such as it is: 15-17 inch steelies and a tire in the 31/10.50 15 to 265/70 17 range... the rest is pretty vague. Think cop-car, but a truck. Starskey would hate it, Hutch would've thought it was bitchin'. I always related to Hutch more...

I don't believe the front is a wider track in the F150 but honestly I have never measured it, I know the front definitely is much wider on my full size van. Factory wheel backspacing on the early '90's F150 and Broncos was 3.75-4" depending upon the wheel and that puts the tire pretty much flush with the top of the wheel opening with an 8" wheel. I would never use a wheel with more than 4" backspacing on these trucks and that of course totally rules out all later model factory wheels.

Have you measured the relative wheel positions on both sides of your truck? It's not uncommon to find there is 1" or more difference side to side.

No... I didn't think to measure side-to-side, although I should have. I didn't measure the track F to R either.

I've rolled around on the floor w a plumb bob, a straight edge, and a tape measure to determine "perfect" tire dims before... maybe I'm just getting lazy...

LOL at "maybe"... I'm lazy. I'm trying to solve issues w a "smart" phone vs actually going and doing the work... a lot of that these days. Seriously, some of the OPs and ensuing threads make me want to bang my head into a wall...
