Old Mans Ride
So I am a total newb to this forum, I have been a member of cummins forum for years now and that is my daily driver, however I'm here to ask some questions on behalf of my old mans truck. The holidays are comin up and I wanted to give ol' blue some new life for my dad. It's an '02 F-250 5.4L Automatic with 3.73's in the pumpkin and 196K on the ol' girl. My dad has already set up with a buddy of his to overhaul the engine and all of that jazz and so my questions are as follows:
#1 he wants a new cam to get put in when it is getting overhauled. What cam if he wants it as a daily driver that just drives around the rand and who should we buy it from?
#2 We are gonna run an SCT tune from 5 Star along with the cam and will do a full intake and complete exhaust, who has the best product for the exhaust headers on this engine?
#3 With all of these mods what tranny mods will I be looking at having to get done to hold this new life? (Keep in mind this truck does tow a 24' cattle trailer often.)
I have done some reading on here and have found bits and pieces of what to do I just wanted some more clarification from the guys who know.
Thanks a ton I can't wait to see the look on his face when he mashes the skinny pedal after new years!!!
Jamdzl!
Your not going to make enough power to really need transmission mods. Best thing to do would be have 5 Star adjust the shift points and shift firmness.
As for headers, You need long tube headers or NO headers at all! Shortys are a wast.
You will probably have to look for headers to fit a 99 to 04 Lightning. They will fit your F-250.
OBX on ebay is about the cheapest stainless steel headers and are nice.
There is also Dynoteach and Kooks. Both make a very nice header.
Another question I have is, the truck 4x4 automatic with 3.73's as mentioned earlier. We aren't feeling the torque like we would want and so we are considering switching to 4.10's will this be enough or should we go with a 4.56 (truck is on 33's) and where are most people buying the gears from?
I went from 3.55s to the 4.10s and it made a world of difference.
A good site to buy stuff from is Summit racing. I think they have Motive gears,or Yukon makes good gears if you can find them anymore.
