Leaf Springs

Hi... I have a 1964 F100 stepside that leans to the driver's side in the front. I assume it is because the leaf springs are original and probably worn out. When I replace them, I assume I should do both sides but should I replace the back springs as well?

Also... where can I find the leaf springs? The only place I can find them is LMC Truck and they seem pretty pricey.

Thanks!

Eaton Detroit Spring, Inc. makes springs for your truck. I don't know how they compare in price, but they are where I plan on getting my springs from. You can order online or just select your springs to get a quote.

BTW, my truck is a 64 f100 flareside and leans to the right side in the front. My rear springs are fine.

Your truck could have a lean due to a twisted frame. Two easy ways for it to have/get a twisted frame are: from being involved in a minor wreck or as a result of being pulled/jerked sideways out of a snow drift or muck hole once upon a time during the past 40+ years.

When I replace them, I assume I should do both sides but should I replace the back springs as well?

Before you start throwing $$ & parts at your truck, I'd suggest you take it to a to a full-service alignment shop. Not some discount tire store or such, but a real alignment shop that can put your truck on their alignment rack and be able to tell you if the frame is bent, twisted, if there is evidence of a past wreck, etc. and to give you an opinion as to why it leans.

I would bet most folks would suggest you should replace the right and left front leaf spring packs, rather than just one side. Depending on your future truck plans and budget - which will likely determine whether or not you should change out the spring packs at all four corners. Does it need new rear springs? - is another good question to ask the alignment shop technician.

Also... where can I find the leaf springs? The only place I can find them is LMC Truck and they seem pretty pricey. Thanks!

Again, I'd start with asking the alignment shop. They may a few favorite sources to suggest to you for your consideration. Your friendly neighborhood auto parts store (such as NAPA) is also a good place to inquire about obtaining new leaf spring packs, U-bolts, spring shackles and attaching hardware.

If you are considering ordering them online or through a local source, be sure to ask about who will pay for the shipping costs, as the spring packs are HEAVY and their shipping costs will add up quickly!

Lastly, I would try to steer you away from getting junkyard leaf springs - you already have some 40+ yr old springs, no need to get more of them!

Depending on how tight of a budget you are on you could look at getting your factory spring rearched. However, a friend who was considering this route found that he could buy a new set directly from Ford for not much more. His truck is a 96 though, so not sure if they still offer a leaf that would fit your year.
