quick temp questions!!

hey guys, been a while since ive been on, last week i killed my 92 f150, and because of all the new parts i decided to put in a reman engine, well thats all done and dandy. now on to the questions...i put in an aftermarket gauge set (temp and oil) so i need to know what is the normal operating temp of the 5.8 in these trucks, also i read that the computer needs the stock coolant temp sensor for the air/fuel mix after the engine warms up. is this true? i will run to town and get a t-fitting for the intake to fit both sensors tonight, but when my motor fried my gauge never showed more than between the "L" and the end of the normal range, so the sensor is probably bad.
thanks in advance!

Should run a 195deg thermostat to ensure it runs at around 180deg.

Is it true yes it it however both the dash gauge and computer use two different sensors on the motor to monitor engine coolant temp so you shouldn't have any need install a Tee provided you did not molest the sensor for the computer.

Sensor for dash temp gauge has one wire connected to it, computers sensor has two wires to it.

when my motor fried my gauge never showed more than between the "L" and the end of the normal range, so the sensor is probably bad

Might be a bad sensor however neither of my trucks get much beyond the N in normal if that when up to normal/full running temp. So yours getting to or near the L might suggest it was in fact running pretty hot.

Did you replace or at least flush the radiator for the new motor? You do not want it running "Hot".

yes, i actually had it boiled out, it was full of oil, (FYI, the block cracked, no i dont have the oil cooler, and the trans cooler was checked)-i was barraged with these questions all around town when it happened, its a disclaimer lol...
so then yeahh....that thing baked
so 180 is a good avg temp? mine seems to run around 190-195 and it seems like it always has
and i did leave the computer sensor wrong
Also i was wondering is there a way to clear the odometer, the transmission had like 5 k on it when i bought it so with the new engine id like it to say 0.0 lol

190-195 is fine and in fact 180 might even be little too cool now thinking about it little more.

I think you can actually have the odometer reading changed but not a simple thing to have done, have to take it to a dealer to do it. That and they would not set it to zero regardless, only changed to reflect currant actual mileage reading for say as an example an odometer replacement do to original quit working.

Yea 92 to 94 will be plug and play.

Better wait deal with dealer until after you change it unless you can use your POSM in it.

The thermostat begins to open at 195, operating temperature is usually 200-210 depending on ambient temperature, load, etc.

Yes it will, for example my 94 did not have a factory tach. I bought a cluster from the bone yard from a truck that did have the tach.

All I did to install it was plug it in, the tach worked just fine. Keep in mind I had a V8 so I requested one from a truck with a V8 just to be sure it work right/read rpms correctly.

The 94 will not be plug and play in a 92 without some rewiring. The alternator won't get its 12v trigger voltage.
92 and 93 are the same and the 94 and 95 are interchangable. The 96 is different.
