i just installed a 1996 model engine with firing order 137 into my 1987 f-150 with the 154 firing order. it seams to run and idle fine until it hits high gear. i used everything from the 87 wiring, ecm, and installed on bare engine.just wanting to know if the 137 firing order will work the 154 firing order ecm?
wouldn't the 137 and 154 firing order cams be different? maybe you need to switch what order the injectors get hooked up in? i wasn't aware that 5.0's came with two different firing orders... learn something new everyday, am i right?
could it be crossfiring? I read somewhere that you can simply pull the 1 or 3 and the 5 or 7 out of the the plug wire retainer (or loom) and this isolates the wire enough to prevent crossfiring.
i think it was in 94 they changed the firing order. that may work switching the infector wires havent thought of that. i dont have the wires in a loom yet just got it running today.
you did hook the MAF sensor, correct? (i'm not trying to insult you, i've seen lots of people forget little things).
you need to do one of two things with the motor:
1. Swap out the cam for one that goes with the ECM (a 137 cam with a 137 ecm)or
2. rewire your fuel injectors to go with the new firing order and leave your plugs wired up for the firing order of the motor (NOT ecm)
I wouldn't rewire the injectors. First IIRC the 87 is a batch fire so I don't know that it's really an issue. Second, at least with Mustang MAF systems half the cylinders run 25% lean, half run 25% rich due to the adaptive fuel system.
Injectors not matching the firing order is really only a problem at idle and low rpms. Higher rpms the injectors are firing fast enough that it's not an issue. The best fix is to use the correct camshaft.
What's your fuel pressure? How about spark advance; is the SPOUT connected?
it idles great and runs great at low rpm just seems like it looses power when i go to fourth gear and running around 2000 rpms.this is a roller engine from a ford explorer. did they even make a roller motor in 87 perhaps a mustang engine?
