Tell that to the guys that fly the F-117...... Todays composite materials are stronger and more durable then the metal parts they replace. Oh, my 2011 F-250 6.7L has a metal trans pan......not sure how yours got to be composite.
Yup, our GI's used it for head protection for over 20 years.
AND THERE WE HAVE IT FOLKS!!! Thanks for that bit of info Huntindog!!! Like i said composite will never be better than metal. These composite parts will come back to bite everyone in the @ss in the end and the consumer will be the one to pay the price. Cheaper is NEVER better.
Well I guess its official. It was on the DieselStop forum. They are switching to metal pans, ironically not because they are better but because they are CHEAPER. A Ford tech came on over there and said don't worry that they are easy to change so when it rusts it's only takes 5 minutes to get off and change (on your time and dime). He also said that the "plastic" ones were overkill.
Does the phrase "be careful what you wish for" sound familiar?

I know this is a regional thing, but where I am in the desert southwest....Metal just doesn't rust fast enough to be a problem..Even unpainted! Plastic anything doesn't fare so well here. Same goes for rubber, fabric etc. So I prefer metal.
At least it will now take a standard Fumoto valve for those interested in installing one. The one person who installed that cobbled together valve on the plastic pan had it leak on him. First report I've ever seen of a Fumoto valve failure.
And my previous comments on this thread are now reaffirmed.
Cost is the deciding factor for Ford. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they now start spouting off the virtues of the new improved oil pan!
Whether your preference is plastic or metal doesn't matter.
Fords preference is lowest cost.
You were right about the cost part. The ironic part was Blieux1 kept complaining that cheaper is never better in regards to the composite pan, well how does that theory apply now?
I live in the northeast so rust is a big issue. My issue with the Ford tech reply that it takes only 5 min. to take off and replace is great except the part is $250 to $300 and I am running full synthetic oil and my dealer has already told me if they do a full syn. oil change it is $250. So my that 5 min job would probably cost me over $500.
Not sure why anyone is changing to the Fumoto plug anyway. This plug is so easy. How easy do you need it? I could see it on the new pan.
Like some said what we think really does not matter.

I really like the Fumoto valve with the nipple. No need for the 5 gallon bucket that every one uses. Just attach a hose and drain the oil back into the jugs it came it. Very clean and easy. And a sorta cheap oil analyisis. You can easily measure just how much drains out. If more comes out than what went in....Time to investigate further.
I just don't think it gets much easier than putting a 5 gallon bucket under the engine and removing the drain plug. I let it drain and go change out the fuel or air filters. No worry about over filling, no having to change several gallon bottles at the appropriate time. After it is done draining, I snap the lid back on and When I get to the oil recycling place, I open the lid and dump out 13 quarts in seconds.
No matter how sweet people make it sound, composite will never be stronger than metal. Since yall are so happy with its durability just build the whole truck out of it frame and all the body. If the oil pans were protected then yea they may be ok but they are not.
I agree, I own torches, welders and other metal working tools that I can fix all metals with. I can't do nothing with plastic but throw it on my burn pile.
I will be buying a new F-350 in the spring regardless of oil pan material...lol. I do run synthetic oil as well; being that rust does not exactly sneek up on you, you could just schedule replacment at your normal service if it does rust out ten years from now (going off how long my 7.3 pan lasted...).
