i have a 1976 f-100 custom with a 302-c4 and i'm considering swapping the automatic transmission for a manual trans. is it possible to use a 4 spd toploader from a mustang? does anyone have pictures of the transmission hump for manual trans in the f-100 cab, gear lever, carpet, clutch pedal asembly etc? tips?
It is possible to use the car toploader. Find a wide ratio box, car bell and clutch. For linkage probably Falcon or Ranchero linkage, as Mustang shifters are too far back for a PU.
I would go with a T5 myself. Not as strong as the toploader, but a lower first and OD 5th. You may find it less expensive than the toploader as well, as the days of $500 and under toploaders littering the scrap yards are over.
You're welcome. That was the swap I was thinking of when I found this site. Never happened, and my E150 went to it's death with the 4 speed OD still in place....
A World Class T5 would be the way to go IMHO. A 2WD F100 doesn;t weight that much more than a late 80s/90s Mustang. The only only downfall would be hauling or towing.
The main benefit is overdrive and having the option of installing steep gears.
OTOH Any small block Toploader will work with matching bell.
Here is a write-up I did converting an FE/C6 Auto to Manual. Pay attention to the clutch hardware and driveshafts if doing the Toploader. A T5 will be a hydraulic situation and who knows what for crossmember and driveshafts.
T5 need not be hydraulic, as it uses the standard bell and clutch. Just check input shaft spline count and size, and for most you have to use the adapter due to input shaft length.
Mazda and ZF truck transmissions require the juice clutch, as they are integral bell and use internal slave cylinders for the SBF flavor.

Hmmm isn't the T5 either early style cable clutch and late style hydraulic?
See, he don't care about the clutch, only that he's bolted to a bell that has one....
ON EDIT: I note the OP is converting from an Auto, so he will need a bell. IF he gets one from a Mustang, he will have to deal with that type of clutch. He can inquire further when selecting one for purchase, and will have that in mind thanks to the prior post.
