I put a flowmaster super 10 muffler on my 86 F250 5.8 today and its supposed to be really aggressive but its not what I was expecting although I haven't put a pipe after the muffler yet. Is it going to sound more aggressive once I add that pipe straight back like 6 ft to tailgate or is it going "muffle" it more. Its just doesn't seem worth the $75. Or did I do something wrong
You will probably end up having to get headers if you want a real aggressive sound, or at least move the muffler under the cab and having a piece of pipe on it just long enough for it to end right behind the cab. I have my 40 Series mounted this way and it's probably the most aggressive it's going to sound until I get headers, considering you've got all the exhaust running through a single 2" pipe (give or take depending on the truck) after the two manifold pipes merge into one.
If your truck has a catalytic converter then that affects the sound too.
It does sound more aggressive but not what I expected. It has 2 cats, can I remove 1? According to the flowmaster site I believe the super 10 is supposed to be the most aggressive. It does sound better just don't know if I see it worth $75. Some says it might also help to put a new air filter maybe K&N. What ya think?
If you have cats, original manifolds or a resonator.
all 3 of those things are going to muffle the sound.
If you had headers and a flowmaster 40 series it would be pretty nasty sounding.
I have headers which run into duel shorty glasspacks then dump out the side of my flareside bed and it sounds amazing. nice quiet idle but a NASTY sounding top end. Might not be for everyone though, epecially since i dont have any cats or resonators on it anymore.
This is what mine sounded like a couple months ago, with the 40 Series in the stock location, with no pipe after the muffler. Factory manifolds but no cats, resonators, etc. Just the 40. 1981 F-150 Exhaust Sound - After Tuning - YouTube
It was LOUD all the time.
I'll post a video shortly of what it sounds like now with the 40 under the cab with a short angled piece of 2.5" pipe after the muffler. With this setup, at idle it's actually pretty quiet, but off-idle it's plenty loud. Around 1,000RPM I have some serious drone, but that's what I wanted. lol.
After seeing this topic, I'm wondering if there's any way I can still have the piece of angled pipe cut back off and set up where I can clamp it on, so that I can run a resonator tip in its place if I want to...hmmmmmm
After watching my video clip again, I am definitely gonna look at a resonator tip so I can get that sound back. I miss it, and it'll sound even nastier with the whole thing right under the cab....hehe
At this point I can't smoke anything, the trans has been acting up for the past week :\ Early next year I'll be getting a rebuilt one if I don't get a junkyard one first to last me, if this current trans doesn't make it til February or so.
