Hey everyone. I got an 90' F-150 with a 4.9L and a M50D transmission. I'm looking for a performance trans that will almost bolt up to the engine. Not worried about the pocket book. So if you have any suggestions or some experience, it would be greatly appreciated.
OK... that's a strange request. What good is a transmission that almost bolts up? What am I missing here?
The Good news is that the 300I6 shares a bellhousing bolt pattern with the 5.0 and 5.8 V8's so there are lots of other transmissions that will bolt up just fine including the Mustang T5 and all those 5 and 6 speed aftermarket Tremec gear boxes. Now what use that is going to be to you with a 150hp farm tractor motor I don't know, but who knows maybe you have nitros and a blower strapped on it or something so who am I to judge.
You could always put a hurst short throw shifter in the M5OD.
I'm not REALLY wanting a "Performance" 300....Just a "Healthy" 300...
As for the manual stuff...I have the ****ty M5OD....And well...Right now, I think pushing a plunger handle around in a bucket of #57 gravel sums up the whole feel of my shifter....
You may have bad shifter bushings or worn out parts in the tower, neither of which is expensive or difficult to repair. Is there anything else wrong with the transmission?
There's always the NP435 if you don't mind trading overdrive for a cast iron case, or the ZF if you can find one. If you're not doing heavy and continuous towing, I have found the M5R2 to be a fine truck transmission. Besides the aggravation of the slave cylinder and a set of shifter bushings, it has given me no problems.

I've already replaced the "Non existant" shifter bushings...ANd that made everything REALLY nice an tight....For a spell...Then, slowly, it started loosening back up again....
And no, I wouldn't mind dropping 5th....I live in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.....Not really a LOT of cruising to be done, because quite frankly, there's no room for it...lol
As for pulling/hauling...I don't do it REGULARLY....But when I do...OH BOY is it a load....Last load I hauled with the truck was a 16ft dual axle trailer, and a 1976 Dodge 1 ton dually.....11,360 lbs when I passed the scales...
The cheap and easy option is one of the 4 speeds then - that's an easy fix! I don't think the t-5 would last very long doing truck duty. You should be able to find an NP 435 at a very good price! And you get rid of the internal slave cyl...
if youre not worried about the pocket book, a t56 is what i'd put in (if by "performance" you mean rippin around bangin gears). it'll hold up to power, and youll have good cruise manners.
i dont laugh at the idea of a performance 4.9. . .ive seen some nasty turbo 300 powered vehicles. 300's generally hold up better to boost vs a 302 and a 351 (out of the box of course). he'd be the one laughing, more times than not, if he was runnin aorund with a turbo'd 300 6 spd combo.
Hey everyone, I have a problem with a 93 f-150 transmission but Im not sure if this is where I post my issue. New to this forum so forgive me if Im in the wrong place.
The mustang T-5 will bolt up, but it won't last long at all. I've broken 3 of them when I was at 300hp in a 2900lbs car. They are not strong at all in stock form. Aftermarket T-5's are better, but the Tremec is what you want if you want a strong 5 speed. My built tremec 3550 is holding 500+ tq no problem.
Good old T-5:
Getting back to topic.. if you have a "healthy" 300 I-6, upgrade to the ZF-5 or build up the M5OD. The 5 speed thunderbird super coupes come with the M5OD and they have 300 ft lbs of torque from the factory..
